There’s little that is more rewarding than harvesting food that eventually ends up on the dinner table. The children at the ICC Romania village have just experienced this in what has become an annual event—the potato harvest.
For three consecutive mornings, August 4 through 6 children and staff labored in the field digging in the rich soil to find the starchy treasures. Potatoes are a basic food in Romania and are used in many ways.
There was a little disappointment in the yield this year because there was a lot of rain last spring. Much of the potato harvest was compromised as a result and the potatoes were smaller and less abundant than normal. Even so, the children and staff gathered about 1,000 Kg (2,200 lbs) of potatoes which will last them until December.
I big thank-you goes to those who have supported the agriculture program of the Romania project. This allows our children to enjoy wholesome food.
Preparations are being made for next year’s agriculture program and additional resources are needed to make it come to fruition. The plan includes: 30,000 m2 (7 acres) of corn; 1,000 m2 (a quarter acre) of potatoes and 5,000 m2 (one-and-a-quarter acres) of garden vegetables including; onions, garlic tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cabbage, cucumbers, beans, peas and lettuce.
The total cost of nearly $3,500 includes seeds and fertilizers. Please consider sending in a special donation to help support this effort.
