Our Older ICC Children Need Your Help — Please Sponsor Today

Tuesday, September 26th, 2017

Sadly, there are young people in our projects that have no sponsors at all due to their age.

Marienne — Congo

That’s why I am asking you today if you will be willing to make a difference for these older children in the children’s villages.

You can make such a tremendous difference if you will just make the decision to be that rock of strength and support that these older kids need right now. They need your prayers, your support and your love in their lives.

These young adults that were devastated by the choices of others at some point in their lives, now have the chance to really make something of their lives, and they almost always choose to help “pay back” for what they have received by helping our smaller children as well as others.

These kids are, and will be, the fruits of YOUR labor as sponsors and donors. Please, pray about this decision to open your life to these wonderful older kids who need you today. I know from my own experience just how much of a blessing I have received by sponsoring an older child, and I will be forever grateful for that opportunity.

Jesus tells us to “Love one another.” I cannot think of anything in this world that can have a greater impact of love than sponsoring one of these older kids and providing that hope that they cling to as they make their own choices for their futures.

Jeanne* lived a normal life, not so unlike the lives we all live. Yes, because she lived in The Congo, her culture and other things were different than the ones we have grown accustomed to, but her everyday life in her family was somewhat like ours.

A photo of Jeanne as a young girl after arriving at PatmosYes, like ours until the one day that Jeanne will never forget. This was the day that would take away everything that she cherished the most.

Jeanne’s whole world was yanked away from her due to her father’s second wife, Jeanne’s stepmother. Even though Jeanne’s parents were divorced and her father had re-married, both of her parents still had a connection to each other. That connection was Jeanne.

Jeanne’s stepmother was jealous and decided to come up with a plan to get rid of both of Jeanne’s parents, and then little Jeanne as well. She decided to poison the food that Jeanne’s Mom and Dad ate.

One day, she found the opportunity to carry out her plan, so she acted on it immediately. Within days, Jeanne’s mom and dad were gone. The stepmother was thrilled, and now she decided to get rid of Jeanne. Instead of poisoning her, the stepmother decided to abandon Jeanne, leaving her to suffer and perish on her own.

Someone from the local area found little Jeanne, and they had heard about the ICC Children’s Village on the island of Idjwi. They heard that this was a wonderful place for orphaned or abandoned children to receive love and hope for their futures. It was a place where these children that came from horrific situations could find a refuge from the storms of their young lives.

This kind person brought Jeanne to the children’s village on Idjwi and told the terrible events that had brought her to this place and time. We don’t know what happened to Jeanne’s stepmother, but we do know what has happened to Jeanne. She was welcomed into the Patmos Island children’s village and became part of a loving family.

Jeanne at age 19Jeanne is 19 years old, and she is going to school. She is a little behind other children her age due to those tragic events that took place early in her life.

I just read a report about Jeanne that says she “is a brave, hardworking and a polite young lady. She helps her house mother by carrying in the water, cooking and searching for firewood for her family’s needs. Jeanne wants to become a teacher when she graduates from her studies in order to make a difference in the lives of other children.”

Jeanne’s is a story that is very much like many other children in our ICC villages. Sure, the circumstances may change, but the horror and traumatic events are similar in their devastation. Jeanne is turning the blessing she is receiving from you into a blessing for others by her helpfulness. Jeanne desires to help other children as she has been helped.

Sometimes it is overwhelming to think of the stories that have taken place in the lives of these kids. It can easily destroy the best of days for me if I just leave the story where it started.

Instead, I rejoice in the fact that your support has helped to make it possible for these children to have a reason to live. No matter the reason or event that caused them to become an orphan, they now have love and hope in their lives because of individuals like you who care enough to continue to support them in tremendous ways.

But, there is one big thing that Jeanne needs right how—someone to sponsor her.

Jeanne is entering the time at ICC that we call “The Harvest.” This is the time when the children graduate from school, graduate from their children’s village and become adults going out into the world to find employment and most importantly, share the love of Jesus with others.

This is a continuing story in which you play the main part as a sponsor or donor. Thank you for what you do to change the lives of these kids by helping to provide what is needed so they can have a happy continuing story!

Jesus tells us to “Love one another.” I cannot think of anything in this world that can have a greater impact of love than sponsoring Jeanne or one of these older kids and providing that hope that they cling to as they make their own choices for their futures.

Sharon is Blessing Students in India

“I wish they [the donors] could see the transformation their support brought in the lives of the children in Sweet Home.” — Lilly Kalagithi

Editor’s Note: Here is another update on what is happening in the life of Sharon Vakkanthula, one of ICC’s grown children from the ICC DEWS Sweet Home in India. It was written by Lilly Kalagithi, founder of the project. Your support blessed Sharon’s life tremendously and she is taking full advantage of her opportunity to serve others.

Thanks to donors like YOU, Sharon is living a life of service to students at Spicer Memorial University in India.

Two beautiful little girls were brought to us by their father. They had lost their mother, and their father could not care for them as he needed to work to provide for them. These two little girls came to us with their bag of clothes and photos of their mother in their hands. They were still grieving for their mother and held on to these precious photos.

These two girls were a blessing to Sweet Home. They always were very special in the way they talked and behaved. They studied well and scored top grades in school. They were very decent and respectful in their behavior, and like little angels they were always willing and ready to help others. They are continuing to do the same today.

Thanks to donors like YOU, Sharon is living a life of service to students at Spicer Memorial University in India.

The younger girl’s name is Sharon Vakkanthula. Sharon studied in the Flaiz Adventist Elementary School and High School. She always had a deep desire to join pastoral ministry. After completing her studies in Narsapur, she enrolled in Spicer Memorial College (now known as Spicer Adventist University). During summer holidays Sharon went out to different towns and villages to assist the gospel ministry.

From the very beginning of her time at Spicer, Sharon gained the favor and confidence of her teachers and professors. She soon became very popular in the college. The Vice Chancellor of the university took her in as his daughter and helped her finish a Master’s degree in Theology.
Sharon is now employed by the university as it’s very first chaplain. She also teaches theology students.

We are grateful to ICC for the continued support, love and care. We are also grateful to the sponsors for the sacrifice they made to give life to the helpless children. I wish they could see the transformation their support brought in the lives of the children in Sweet Home.

Sharon is very happy to work for the Lord who sustained her all these years. We are also very proud of Sharon and her accomplishments.
What a blessing it is to see Sharon use her talents in service to God by serving others! Thank you for your generous support of children like Sharon.

YOU can help the Kids have a Merry Christmas!

Tuesday, November 8th, 2016

This year, your contribution to the Gift Fund is best made before December 1.

With Christmas just a few weeks away, you may be thinking you would like to do something for the child, or children, you sponsor. Sending actual gifts to the children is discouraged because some children could receive more gifts than others which, as you can imagine, would most likely cause hurt feelings.

There is a way for sponsors who wish to give gifts at Christmas (this also works for Birthdays). ICC has a Gift Fund for each of the children’s villages. You may donate any amount to this fund. The fund is used to purchase gifts for all the children and to provide a special Christmas meal.

This is the best solution to helping you give gifts and make beautiful memories for your child. You may, if you so choose, let your child know you have contributed to their celebration in your next letter or card.

Sending your gift by December 1st will allow us time to forward your gift to the proper children’s village in time to prepare for the holiday festivities.

You may make your contribution with a check to ICC, at our website (ForHisKids.org), or by telephone (800.422.7729).

Please be sure your contribution designates your gift is for the Gift Fund. Also tell us to which children’s village it should be credited. This will assure it reaches the proper Gift Fund.

Thank you for making these wonderful children a part of your lives. We want to wish you blessed Thanksgiving and Holiday Season.

“I’ve Got to Talk to You!”

“I Need to Tell You How Thankful I Am!”

You play a critical role in supplying all the things an orphan child needs when you providing funding by sponsoring an ICC child. When most of the children arrive, they often have nothing more than the clothes they are wearing. They don’t have money to provide for their care, and most governments don’t provide any assistance.

It’s donors like you who stand in the gap and say, “This child needs the loving care of a family. This child needs food, shelter and a place to go to school. I will help to provide these things for this child!”

Your support is making a huge difference in the lives of orphaned children. Constanza is just one example of a life transformed thanks to donors who invested in her—even during her darkest days when she was very young.

Your support is making a huge difference in the lives of orphaned children. Constanza is just one example of a life transformed thanks to donors who invested in her—even during her darkest days when she was very young.

If it weren’t for caring donors like you, what would have happened to a little Dominican girl we’ll call Constanza? When Constanza was young, her father died. Her mother was poor and had a mental illness. She could not provide the care that Constanza needed. It was fortunate for little Constanza that she was eventually placed in a loving family at the Las Palmas Children’s Village. The care she received was made possible because donors like you came alongside of her to support her.

Constanza received nurturing care at Las Palmas and she needed these things very much. You see, Constanza suffered from depression.
She struggled and struggled. She was given psychological help and counseling and was treated with medication. The staff of Las Palmas worked with her, encouraged her and made sure she was following her treatment plan. Those were challenging days. But through this experience, Constanza became aware of just how much she was loved by all the people who cared for her—including YOU, her ICC family.

In time, Constanza graduated from the Las Palmas secondary school. She then enrolled at the local Adventist university in the nursing program which had just been established. Recently, Constanza become Las Palmas’ first child to graduate with a nursing degree. What a great accomplishment, especially when you consider the difficulties she has faced! But thanks to donors like you who made it possible, she received the care and support needed and she has taken full advantage. Furthermore, her heart is filled with gratitude for everything that has been done for her.

Recently Rick and Sharon Fleck visited the Las Palmas Children’s Village. It was late one evening, and who should come knocking on the guest room door? It was Constanza. She called out to Rick and Sharon. She wanted to talk to them.

Rick replied, “Constanza, we’re asleep already.”

Urgently, Constanza insisted, “But I’m leaving early in the morning, and I’ve got to talk to you. I need to tell you how thankful I am.

Rick got dressed and let her in. Constanza was then able to express her gratitude—the kind of urgent, heartfelt gratitude that goes to you as well. Again, without donors coming along side of her, supporting her with prayers and moral and financial support, where would she be?

Thank you for your generous donations! This work is not possible without your continued gifts. Children like Constanza bear witness that your investment is well worth it!

YOUR Support of Orphan Children is Vital!

Tuesday, October 4th, 2016

YOUR support of the ICC children is amazing! And it goes beyond the gifts you give. You’ve helped to rescue and restore the lives of children. Thanks for all you do!

This is about the incredible effect that YOU—and other donors like you—are having on the lives of the children you support through your gifts!

The child you sponsor sees you as far more than a source of financial support. They see you as a “God-parent.” YOUR care for them significantly increases their sense of well-being.

The child you sponsor sees you as far more than a source of financial support. They see you as a “God-parent.” YOUR care for them significantly increases their sense of well-being.

It’s no secret to any of us at ICC that this ministry would simply not be possible if it wasn’t for the faithful financial and prayer support that YOU continue to give. Not only on a monthly basis, but year after year.

The child you sponsor sees you as far more than a source of financial support. They see you as a “God-parent.” YOUR care for them significantly increases their sense of well-being.

With humble dedication and service YOU provide for the needs of “the least of these”—the very ones Jesus spoke about while here on earth. You have taken His example from the Bible and intentionally made it part of how you choose to live your own life.

Because of your gifts of love, the children’s lives are made better every day. YOU continue to do a wonderful work on behalf of “His Kids!”

Some donors like you have asked for a list of needs. Sometimes projects need some very important items and there aren’t sufficient funds to cover them within the projects operating budget.

From time to time, we plan to share lists like this in case you have the means, or know of someone who may be able, to provide a blessing for the kids in this way.

As you read this we hope that you will be inspired by the good that YOU are doing collectively for the grateful family of “His Kids.”

As you serve the children, any suggestions you may have on how we can better serve you please let us know by calling 800-422-7729.

A Small Church With A Big Heart

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

In 2006, ICC began a special sponsorship campaign called “One Church, One Child.” Since the start of this program, many churches, big and small, have partnered with ICC in providing for the care of orphaned and vulnerable children. This initiative continues to be a blessing for ICC’s children.

Recently, our attention was drawn to one particular church that has a big (and growing) heart for “His Kids.” This church of 22 members, most on fixed incomes, is located in the small town of Portales, New Mexico. In January of 2007, this church joined ICC’s One Church, One Child campaign. Accompanying their most recent sponsorship donation was a note which read:

“Because God has blessed our group we are adding funds for two more children. So now we will be paying for eight children each month instead of six.”

The ever expanding generosity of this church merited further investigation. What was this church like? What caused the members to continue to expand their support far beyond the original scope of only sponsoring one child?

One of the church members, Merlene Olmsted, provided insights into how the church’s involvement with ICC has grown over the years. She said that the church decided to sponsor two children at the beginning. “We didn’t even know how it would go,” Merlene recalled.

As time passed, support increased. Merlene continued, “We would be going along and the church treasurer would say, ‘We have this much money, and we’re way ahead. Why don’t we sponsor more children?’”

About once a quarter, Merlene shares with the church news or information from the Que Pasa newsletter, ICC’s website or something one of the sponsored children has written. Recently, at an evening board meeting after one of those presentations was made, the treasurer indicated that there was $1,000 in the sponsorship fund for the children and there was only a few months left in the year. The board decided then to sponsor two more children bringing the total number to eight. That is more than one third of the church’s membership! With these latest additions, the church now sponsors three children in Congo, two children in the Dominican Republic and one child each from Mexico, Nicaragua and Guatemala.
